Stop Collecting Letters. Start Owning Your Worth.

A few weeks ago, I was chatting with a surgical colleague. We got into the usual “what’s next?” conversation; the kind surgeons often fall into.

He told me about an upcoming fellowship he was applying for. Not because it was in a subspecialty he truly loved, but because he felt it would “look bad” not to have it.

He already had MRCS. FRCS. A diploma. An MSc. But somehow, it still didn’t feel like enough.

When I asked him why he needed this fellowship, he paused for a long time. Then he said:

“I guess I just don’t feel I’ll be taken seriously without it.”

That sentence stuck with me. Because I’ve heard it so many times — from colleagues, juniors, even senior consultants.

Surgeons are trained to be professional collectors of letters. We stack them up like trophies. We tell ourselves:

➡️ “I’ll finally be respected when I pass this next exam.”

➡️ “I’ll be confident when I finish this course.”

➡️ “I’ll be ready when I add that fellowship to my title.”

But here’s the problem: If your worth is always tied to the next certificate, you’ll never feel enough. Because there will always be one more.

Where This Mentality Comes From

This obsession didn’t come from nowhere.

Generations before us worked in a system where qualifications were the ultimate ticket. A longer title meant a safer job, more authority, and higher status.

And for a while, that made sense. In a world where hierarchies were rigid, exams and fellowships were the only real “currency.”

But medicine has shifted. Patients don’t choose their surgeon because of how many acronyms they’ve collected. They choose the one they trust. The one who communicates well. The one who is visible, respected, and skilled.

The old rules told us: “Keep stacking letters, and you’ll be safe.” The reality is: you’ll burn out chasing worth in places you’ll never find it.

Learning the New Rules

This doesn’t mean exams or fellowships aren’t important. They are; when they truly serve you.

The distinction is this:

✅ Take the qualifications that align with your goals.

✅ Invest in training that adds real depth to your craft.

✅ Pursue learning that excites you and moves your career forward.

But if you’re chasing another certificate only because you’re scared of being “less than” without it… that’s not growth. That’s fear.

Sometimes, the best use of your time isn’t another exam. It’s:

⚡ Mastering the skills you already have.

⚡ Building your reputation and brand in your lane.

⚡ Creating space for your creativity, your family, your life.

The Real Source of Confidence

Confidence doesn’t come from adding one more line to your CV. It comes from clarity, alignment, and the courage to build a career that reflects your true worth.

The next time you feel the pressure to sign up for another course, exam, or fellowship, ask yourself:

👉 Do I really need this?

👉 Or am I chasing it because I fear I won’t look good without it?

Don’t be a qualification junkie. Be the surgeon who knows their worth.

Because the truth is: your value was never in the letters. It’s in how you use what you already know to create impact, to lead, and to build a life that’s truly yours.
